Frequently Asked Questions
What is a domain name?
Similar to how your house address indicates where you live in the world, a domain name indicates where your computer's location is on the Internet. Organizations that do business over the Internet want domain names (addresses) that are easy to remember and that are closely related to their company's trademark, so that customers can locate their web site very easily.
The actual domain name is a simplified, easier to read translation of an IP (Internet Protocol) address. The Internet is composed of a vast number of interconnected computers. Each of these computers is assigned a numeric value of the form XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX. This numeric value is called an IP address. If each computer on the Internet were identifiable only through its IP address, people would have a lot of difficulty when trying to locate each other and having to memorize each other's addresses. Domain names simplify IP addresses into an easy to remember combination of words and numbers.
What is the difference between the different TLD's ?
The domain suffixes are intended to differentiate between various types of organizations on the Internet. Generally, the following rules apply:.com -- businesses and commercial enterprises.
The domain suffix type itself has no bearing on accessibility on the Internet from a technical standpoint, but over time the .com domain type has become the most popular and recognizable on the Internet. Many businesses now register their domain (s) with all three endings to ensure competitors or speculators do not register a similar domain.
.net -- network-related organizations and enterprises.
.org -- charitable or non-profit organizations.
.biz -- targeted to business but unrestricted to general use.
.info -- unrestricted to general use.
.ws -- If you have previously been unable to obtain your desired domain name, the ".WS" SamoaNIC top level domain (TLD) makes domain names that were unavailable in the past available to you now.
.us -- basically any U.S. citizen, corporation or corporation with an interest within the U.S. .Who can register?
- Individuals, organizations, ISPs, corporate resellers, etc. Anyone who currently wants, or is thinking of acquiring, a distinctive, individual presence on the Internet now, or at some time in the future.
- Domain names are for People In Business: businesses that want customers to find them on the Net, and who wish to communicate with their customers through e-mail.
- Domain names are for Information Providers: the Internet allows an unlimited number of people to have access to detailed information at little or no cost to the information provider.
- Domain names are for People Like You: if you want a recognizable presence on the Internet, a domain name will allow others to find you easily and quickly.
Why should I register a domain name (s)?
Domain names are designed for people, IP addresses are designed for computers. If a company wants people to find their web site easily, they will need a domain name.Domain names are registered on a first-come first-served basis. The fact that someone may have incorporated under a name or even that they have filed a trademark application does not automatically permit them to use that name. All parties who have legitimate use for a name, share the same rights to a name.
If a company conducts business over the Internet, or even if that company plans to do so in the future, they should register their domain name(s) now. Once a name is taken, it's gone.
What are the rules for creating a domain name ?
A domain name can include up to 63 characters before the .COM, .NET, or .ORG ending. You can use numbers, letters, and dashes in your domain but the domain cannot start or end with a hyphen. Domains also cannot contain spaces. Domain names are not case sensitive, so you can spell -- and advertise -- your domain in UPPERCASE, lower case, or BoTh cAseS for your email and website address. Special characters such as the underscore "_", the exclamation point "!", and the "@" sign are not permitted.
Do long domain names work?
Yes. the registrars server is configured to accept longer domain names up to 63 characters in length ( 67 when including the extension ). Previously, all .com, .net, and .org domain names were limited to 26 characters.
How much could a domain name be worth?
Domain names can be worth thousands and thousands of dollars. The more practical and useful it is for others, the more it will be worth. Recently, business.com sold for $7.5 million and computer.com sold for $500,000.Domain names can be worth even more in non-monetary terms. Companies that have spent a great deal of time and money on establishing a corporate identity may find the value of their domain name immeasurable. The worth of a domain name is high, and there is no limit to just how high.
I’ve decided to register my name in the .COM top level domain. Should I also register my name in the other top level domains?
It is a good idea, especially if you are a business. Getting a domain name now will cost you about $25 USD / year. However, if someone else registers these names and a conflict develops, it could cost you thousands of dollars with no guarantee you will be successful. Think of the extra registration fees as inexpensive insurance.
Once I have a domain name secured, how long will I own the domain for?
Provided that there are no trademark disputes, and that the annual fees are maintained, your secured domain name will be yours indefinitely. As long as you wish to use it, it will be yours. Can I cancel, change or modify a domain name once I have registered it?
When you submit your information, an available domain is registered in real time and and cannot be changed in any way. Please be sure to check your spelling before you submit your information as no refunds are allowed once a name is registered.
